Can I wear Invisalign braces?

Your smile is a major part of what you project to the outside world. If you feel things aren’t quite right with your teeth, it can understandably affect your self-esteem.

Many people reach adulthood feeling this way and either wrongly assume it’s too late to do anything about it, or find the thought of wearing noticeable braces off-putting. Fortunately, with Invisalign braces, it’s very difficult for anyone to notice you have braces at all.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign transparent plastic aligners are tailor-made to fit exactly over your teeth. Different sets of Invisalign braces are worn for two weeks at a time, gradually applying the right amount of pressure to your teeth, so they slowly move into their final, straight position.

Unlike fixed braces, which feature brackets glued to your teeth, you have to remove Invisalign aligners for eating, brushing your teeth and drinking anything other than water.

What is the Invisalign treatment process?

Once you’ve found an orthodontist who specialises in Invisalign, make an appointment to talk things over and decide if it’s a treatment that’s right for you.

Your orthodontist will devise a personalised treatment plan for you by taking x-rays, photographs and impressions. They will use these to map out the movement of your teeth, and work out approximately how long it will take to achieve your straight smile.

They can also show you a 3D simulation of how your teeth will look at the end of treatment, by scanning your teeth using iTero dental imaging technology.

A series of custom-made aligners are then produced for you. You should wear your aligners for 20-22 hours each day to get the best results.

Every two weeks you will switch to a new set of aligners and have a check-up to see how the treatment is progressing. All patients are different but treatment for adults typically takes about a year. Once the treatment is complete, you can start to love your new straight smile!

To protect your lovely new straight teeth, you will need to wear retainers (removable plastic braces to be worn overnight) so your teeth don’t start to shift out of position.

Who can wear Invisalign?

Your specialist orthodontist will be able to assess if Invisalign treatment is right for you. Invisalign braces are suitable for most adults who want straighter teeth.

Invisalign Teen braces, meanwhile, can only be used to treat some teenagers.

What are the advantages of wearing Invisalign?

They’re invisible

The aligners are made of transparent plastic so most people won’t realise you’re wearing them.

They’re comfortable

The smooth surface of Invisalign’s BPA-free plastic won't rub on your cheeks and gums the way traditional metal braces can.

Treatment is flexible

Invisalign braces are removable so you can take them out whenever you want, without any hassle.

They’re food friendly

Unlike other types of braces, you can eat whatever you like with Invisalign braces because you remove them before eating. Be sure to clean your teeth properly before putting your aligners back in.

What’s the next step?

Remember that fixing your smile as an adult is not a big deal, thanks to modern invisible braces.
