Parents who find out their child needs orthodontic treatment often ask us the question: “do braces hurt?” Because braces straighten teeth by applying gentle pressure, it’s inevitable that some patients will feel tenderness.
Most of the children we treat wear fixed braces, made from metal or ceramic/porcelain brackets and wires.
The degree of discomfort depends on the treatment and the individual.
If your child suffers from soreness for any longer than a few days at a time - or if you have any concerns or questions - you should call your orthodontist straight away.
Fitting braces is not painful but they can feel unusual at first - and sometimes uncomfortable - as your mouth gets used to them.
Your child’s braces may initially cause sore spots on their gums or the inside of their lips but this should quickly heal.
The orthodontist will tell you if simple painkillers may be appropriate in the first few days. It’s important to read the instructions on the packet to make sure they are suitable for your child.
Always remember, if tenderness continues, your child’s orthodontist can adjust the braces to make them more comfortable. Download our free Teeth Straightening Guide For Kids to learn more.
With most fixed braces, your child will need to come to see the orthodontist for adjustments every 6-8 weeks.
Your child may feel discomfort after an adjustment but it should help them to know that this is all part of the process of getting lovely, “new” straight teeth.
After the initial fitting, or subsequent adjustments, any discomfort does not usually last longer than three days.
They should stick to soft foods at first and avoid hard foods such as French bread or carrots. They should also cut all their food into smaller pieces.
Your child’s first visit to Metamorphosis Orthodontics will certainly be no more uncomfortable than a regular check-up at the dentist. We specialise in caring for our patients and ensuring the experience is positive and in many cases enjoyable.
We will usually carry out a detailed diagnostic review including x-rays and photographs. We will also talk through any concerns you and your child have about their dental health.
Removing the braces at the end of treatment does not hurt and your child will be happy to reveal their new smile!
At Metamorphosis, we have a wealth of experience in treating young patients so we know how to make treatment as painless and stress free as possible.
It’s important to come to see an orthodontist who understands the concerns of you and your child.
